Answering Pressing Roofing Questions: A Roof Repair FAQ

Anything broken needs immediate attention, more so when youre talking about your roof. After all, your roof is responsible for protecting your home. With a task as important as that, anything it needs must be addressed as soon as possible. But while people know this, there are those still in the dark about many things regarding roof repair. Lets clear up a few concerns by answering some important roof repairs questions.

Do you really need roof repair?
Chances are, yes, but the real answer is mostly guided by the extent of the damage. There are times when signs of roof damage do not show the real extent of the problem. For example, you may see small water marks on your walls or ceiling, but this doesnt mean that the damage to the roof is minor. Water flowing from a leak can be trapped in other parts of the attic, leading only a portion be visible on the wall or ceiling. If you brush it away, thinking the damage is too small to be a problem, its likely that that youll be facing costlier repairs in the future as damage can not only grow but can affect non-roof parts of your home as well.

Aside from physical damage, mold infestation should also be a sign that immediate repair is needed. Mold doesnt look dangerous but it can lead to material damage when left to proliferate. If youre not afraid of a little mold because you think it cant hurt your home, youre wrong. Mold growth may not sound intimidating but it can be a real bane to the health of your family when inhaled.
What are the signs your roof needs a repair ASAP?
The most common signthat youre dealing with roof damage  is the presence of leaks, which can easily by identified through watermarks on your ceiling or walls. However, damage can also be present in other forms, such as:
  • Age. Different roofs have different lifespans. If yours is past its prime, however, then theres a good chance that it will need repairs simply because components have started to fail, even if signs of damage arent obvious. Roofs are built to be last but they are not invincible.
  •  Missing or loose shingles. Even if your roof hasnt began to leak yet, missing or loose shingles are a sign that it wont be long before it does. Missing roofing material means there is a gap in your roof, translating to a gap in your homes defenses.
  • Damaged flashing or gutters. Flashing is responsible for sealing joints between roofing material or between roofing material and another part of the roof. if it has any damage then, it means that its ability to seal a joint has been compromised, providing water with a means of entry into your roof.  A damaged gutter, on the other hand, is problematic because it is not draining water properly away, meaning moisture can get to other places and eventually cause roofing damage.
When is the best time to perform roof repair?
Thebest time to have your roof repairedis the moment you realize something is wrong. After all, the sooner a repair is carried out, the sooner a roof can get back into top shape to protect your home. However, you should also take into consideration that there is such a thing as peak and off-peak roofing seasons. Summer and fall are the busiest times of the year because weather conditions are ideal for roof repairs, while winter is the slowest. Should you be facing an emergency, however, dont hesitate to get in touch with a roofing contractor no matter the time of the year to address your problem as soon as possible.
